I listened to this song again...and I love it, but I must admit one thing...Whitney is still doing that "talk-sing" thing that I can't stand.
That's the one thing that bothers me...she's not sustaining notes.

New Music: Whitney Houston - 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength'
As one legend leaves us, another is on the brink of a comeback. Whitney Houston ![]() "I didn't know my own strength/ And I crashed down and I tumbled/ But I did not crumble/ I got through all the pain/ I didn't know my own strength," the 45-year-old diva sings.

After putting the song on repeat on my ipod this morning(lol) I must admit I love this song yet I understand the disappointment many fans and others have about
it. There's no big "Whitney Finish" to the song, its very mellow yet strong enough to convey the message she's sending, and I think it was
done on purpose. Diane wrote a beautiful song to let Whitney testify, this is going to be the song most journalist and interviewers are going to wanna talk
about because of her past and her problems, so I think this is the perfect buzz single, which it is. From the RUMORS I've heard this is not the official
1st single, this is just the buzz single to get people talking, from what I've heard the 1st singles either going to be an AKeys tune or one of the Neyo
songs. But this is doing exactly what Clive and Arista hoped - get people talking. All in all I'm loving the song, I think she sounds great the conviction
in her voice is there, her tone, her breathing, its all there. High notes will come back in time but I'm super ampt about the album now. Welcome back nippy

OK after a week out of the country on hols, I got to finally listen to the track today.
I have to say I was blown away. Such a simple song delivered in the way only Whitney can - heartfelt, soulful - to be honest, this song sounds like it would be great acapella - surely one of the signs of a great vocalist is their ability to deliver a song with sincerity and meaning without music ? For me, only Mario Lanza matches Whitney for vocal delivery. Listen to his 'The Thrill Is Gone' as proof. If this is the unfinished version, let it stand as an introduction to her return - and please please let it not be ruined by over-production. Whitney can deliver the song by herself - let the music add to it, not take from it. Is it a summer hit - who knows ? Is it a single even - who knows ? Is it a reminder for me of why I fell in love with her voice way back in the 80s - most definitely. Welcome Back I Say. |

I'm confident Arista will be confirming the single (or a single) next week. The leak was intentional. Too much info couldn't be released last wk
because of Michael's death which dominated the news. However, on Thursday we rec'd 2 major bits of info: the GMA appearance and the leak of the song.
Be patient people. Next week is only 36 hours away. |

I think the biggest hits from this album will be songs that have not be publicized. I think because of comments from Diane Warren and everyone else with a
"name" people set their expectations to I will always love you... It's those expectations that kills it. It is my hope that the album has enough
tracks 14-16tracks and that when people get it, they get to make an opinion about what they love.

this is a good first single in regards to her talking about her drug issues. if she is on tv or radio interviews they will talk about the song and that easily
leads to her past. she can talk this over and over with different people, be upfront etc and then come the 2nd and 3rd single etc all that drug use is in the
past and she does not have to talk about it again.
this song also will be great for so many struggling people. people with cancer, broken relationships, lost job etc. for these tough times it is a very moving song. |

The more I listen to it, the song does seem to kind of miss a climax ... it heads in that direction
w/ the music & Whitney backing herself but then it kinda ends. Maybe it is just wishful thinking but perhaps her voice was not ready for the typical
Houston bombastic ending so they are going to add that later. Even Exhale (Shoop Shoop) which is a rather subdued
song had a climatic ending.
If I remember correctly, Clive Davis had Heather Headley go back & spice up the ending of "I Wish I Wasn't" so perhaps he will do the same here. |

I think we got what we got, isn't it a little late to be fixing songs or re-recording them? This song was recorded in February, its not like her voice is
going to be any different in July.
I'll say it again, I think her voice is fine, I like it. That one part at 2:10 should have been re-done, but that's not a huge deal. The biggest flaw of the song is the production. David Foster should be ashamed of calling that song a David Foster production, and Clive should be ashamed for letting David do such a sloppy job. I really do hope that the leaked song was not the mastered version. I have a strong feeling that they still need to master it. If you compare the new song with any of the ballads from MLIYL something about the production is too raw on the new track. Does anyone know the latest a label can have the CD's made? |

I always thought foster didn't like whitney that much maybe this is his way of showing it with this average production job lol

I must admit it really took me quite numerous listens before i could finally appreciate the hook of idkmos. this must be the reason why some fans would rather
this not be the first single because the first single should always be a crowd pleasers for fans as well as non fans for it to be well received.
I'm happy with Whitney's delivery with only just one small comment - she should pay more attention to her long notes eg. rifts. The rifts delivered in idkmos are kind of slack & lack a certain of precision which could easily be mistaken as slight raspiness and a lack of stability & clarity in her voice. And if possible, take out 'I' in the phrases like - I didn't know my own strength to read "Didnt know my own strength". The flow would instantly improved and not be as mouthful & clumsy as the original. Having said that, knowing that the actual version was probably recorded already, and is too late for any kind of amendment, I am still very pleased overall. I am confident that all fans would fall in love with this version of idkmos eventually . |

just to illustrate my point on the clumsiness in the phrase "i didn't know my own strength". Rightfully the stress should be on
'didn't' & 'strength' lyrically.

great music is still here. I'm glad she sound great.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Nice, meaningful vocal. WTG Whitney. You've taken this song and made it your own emotionally and vocally.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Go Whitney! The lyrics work. To me it feels more like an album song than a radio release.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Love the meaning of the song…but its a little weak for a first single.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
Uhmmm, so sorry, but this is horrible. Scratchy, throaty and outdated,,,
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
i like it just cuz its her… if it were someone else i dont know?? not great for a comeback. but go for it whitney! love you much
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
This song is so out of here! Cant wait for the world to hear it. They are gonna love it. Lends for a dramatic video. And you know Whitney is gonna kill it live.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
After all the drugs, I was actually impressed with her voice. It's not Whitney back in the day, but it's still better than any new artist on the radio today. It's pretty damn good for an older singer.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:24 pm
not so impressed by the song. but is sweet. in some parts it is too fast for a balland. and her voice sound a little bit tired. but is a sweet song.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I loved it! I don't think it was the best decision for the first single but who cares at this point, we got a new Whitney song! Her voice is definitely deeper and more hoarse but she still sounds amazing.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:41 pm
she needs more to have a "comeback". you can hear the effects of being a "rockstar" has on her voice….and it's going to be worse live. poor whitney.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:16 am
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:02 am
LOVE the lyrics.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 am
Love the song! Very fitting of where she is musically and vocally. She needs to do what feels right. I hope she did something like "It's not right but it's ok" or "If I told you that" .. i'm pretty sure she did.
and I agree with Lo.. she's doing great for th things she has done in the past. In my oinion Aretha doesn't have much of anything left, but she still tries to gurgle her way through songs.. Yes, she's obviously older than whitney, but still
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:46 am
the song is not bad, but nothing for a first single…
would be ok for a third single
she should have combined something modern with the 90's style… but this song is nothing i would buy..on an album, yes, not as a single
lyrics are good…
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:55 am
Love Whitney, the lyrics strike a chord. Overall the song is a bore.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:02 am
SHE REPEATS SO MUCH I DIDN'T KNOW MY OWN STRENGHT- AND SHE SOUNDS TIRED. HASN'T SHE HAD TOO MUCH REST?
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:09 am
i dont like it…she could have done better for a "comeback" single…
July 3rd, 2009 at 10:55 am
Im not a whitney fan. But its a good intro-song to her new album as it portrays that she's back and empowered and its an inspirational song as it says "Never give up" your stronger than you think.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:10 pm
^^^^as said, the lyrics are good, but its not catchy
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I love this song. I was skeptical, but Whitney still holds her own.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:04 am
I'm so glad Whitney's back! She sounds great and the song is beautiful!
Already gon buy that album!
July 4th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I like the song but its not a firs single its a preview track I believe. Has anyone read the Kola Boof memoir about Bin Laden jonesing for Whitney? LOL! It's fire. I will be buying Whitney's new CD on or before Sept. 1st because the R. Kelly track alone is ridiculous. GO WHITNEY!
July 4th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I think Whitney sounds just fine. Personally, it's the song I don't really care for.
