Like I said, Mariah has no albums show up on the sites listing the most acclaimed albums for each year- and there are nearly 100 albums listed for each year- again, none of her albums appear. Daydream would not be considered a critical hit- mixed reviews at best. And, Alicia Keys debut certainly is more of a critics; hit than Carey's debut- how could U even compare the two?!? I was using Lauryn Hill as an example of a good choice NARAS made- it was back-to-back good choices, with Dylan preceding her. Not that Santana wasn;t a good choice- it just wasn't close to being the biggest critical hit of the year- but, again, that doesn't really matter whyen it coms time to nominate albums.

I think WH having already won the award for TBG hurt Exhale's chances, thus Celine slips in takes the award. It was a shame because Exhale was kind of a mini-showcase for some of our greatest black female singers. This 2nd album syndome may have been what hampered Celines follow-up album featuring the theme from "Titanic"(I can never remember the name of that song).

For another, they got about the same level of critics' reviews (both average out to about a B) and got the same comments - good voice, promising debut for someone young, needs to improve writing skills. It's not like Alicia's reviews have been amazing (Nelly Furtado has gotten better reviews). As for PEOPLE - it is the Dec. 25, 1995 issue and they say about DAYDREAM: The shaggy siren takes a little off the top of her mile-high range and acrobatic coloratura on her fourth and finest album. The result is a pop potpourri: heady, poised, and elegant. Other albums in their top 10 for 1995 include PJ Harvey, Radiohead, D'Angelo, and Annie Lennox. I can't get the NY Times top 10 as that site is for subscribers only. I will try to locate it, though. Be assuerd that it was included in their top 10 for 1995.

For rap, Eminem, Jay-Z and maybe even Flufff Daddy. Mariah and Janet of course. The man is coming back in a big way. Hold on a second: there has been a change. The new cd will sill be called Invis-something. Plus six weeks after the big concert, the cd wil come out. That is great. I think the most interesting categories this year will be the R&B categories. With new CD's by Mary J (surely it's her turn by now?), Janet, Destiny's Child Alicia Keyes (I downloaded some tracks - a great album) there's going to be a lot of competion. Mariah may get a Pop Vocal Performance Nomination for "Never Too Far". I can't think of too much competition and perhaps with her recent breakdown, the Grammy's will take pity on her. I think Sony and Michael Jackson are clearly petrified of releasing his new album. They are playing a very dangerous game, they have built momentum so high for this record that it simply will not be able to equal the hype. The media loves knocking Michael so you can expect the media to have a whale of a time.

They compared her Unplugged performance to Eric Clapton's, and they said Mariah's was better. I also remember Ent Weekly putting Mariah's Unplugged performance in their GREAT PERFORMANCES section of the year-end issue.

DAYDREAM is listed high on Stephen Holden's pop list and he says: When Ms. Carey stops belting arena pop and sings intimate pop-soul ballads with Boyz II Men, Babyface, and others, her newest album carries choral rhythm-and-blues to new heights of sophistication.
