As the songs is playing I'm taking in the music and something about it keeps distracting me. The song has a beautiful start, all the while complimenting her vocals nicely. Even when the full accompaniment comes in, it still keeps most of its raw beauty. Then right as the production starts to build, all of the sudden it just stays flat. My ears are expecting the music to keep up with the emotion of the vocals, but it briefly disconnects. Then after a brief boring part of the production, it then meets back up with Whitney, and again starts to move me.
On those parts where it's flat I always think to myself, 'something is missing?'. If only the music did something different and emoted more of that sad feeling this song deserves. Her vocals make me sad (in WONDERFUL way) I really feel her- but the music doesn't fully support that feeling.
After really paying close attention to the music I finally figure out what's missing for me.
IT'S THE VIOLINS.
They need to be more prominent and play out the melody more in a way that that has real movement- especially on the parts of the song where she sings:
I got through all the pain.... that part of the music the violins could really sing those words.
And then on the two main versus of the song:
but i did not crumble...
and
I was not built to break...
Those are the most powerful lyrics in the entire song and the music doesn't do anything special for them. But a layered violin on top could be something special.
All in all I like the production and I love the song. At it's worse moments, it bores me- but with minimal tweaking I think it could actually be a masterpiece.
So what are your thoughts on the music?- just the music aspect of the song??
