Here's a review from Lisa (W-F)
Rather than answer 50 questions in the chat room, here are my initial thoughts. I will write something more cohesive tomorrow after I've had a chance to think: - I expect the new album to be a hit. I think it sounds better than what's on the radio. It's contemporary without going overboard, unlike some other artists who shall remain nameless. - I think if you liked the "My Love Is Your Love" album, you will easily enjoy the "I Look To You" album. MLIYL is my favorite Whitney Houston album, and I know from our own polls that a majority of this board loves the MLIYL album best. So I think the majority of us will love the ILTY album. - They played nine songs: Million Dollar Bill, Nothin' But Love, Call You Tonight, I Didn't Know My Own Strength, Like I Never Left, Salute, I Look To You, Worth It, and A Song For You. Of these songs, MDB was my personal choice for first single. I really hope that they release Million Dollar Bill first. - They did not announce the first single or show a music video for the first single yet. Barry Weiss introduced Clive Davis, and noted that Larry Jackson is the album producer along with Whitney and Clive. - I did not meet Whitney. I met Cissy Houston and I attempted to find the right person to give our message book to. Cissy saw the cover and said it was lovely. A gentleman who was with Cissy recommended that I inquire with a nearby woman about getting the book to Whitney somehow, but that woman was talking non-stop for the rest of the cocktail half-hour, and I am not pushy or rude enough to interrupt. So I will mail the book to Nippy Inc. instead. While I did not meet Whitney, they did inform Ulysees (on Whitney's staff) that I was there. But no one approached me the entire time that I was there. This is just a first taste, and I am writing the next part right now. |

(I really got to get to bed)
Here's the 2nd part to Lisa's report: The one song that I definitely did not hear yet was "I Got You." Clive said that there are two more songs still being worked on besides the nine that I heard, so that is in line with an 11-track album, as already reported. Looking back at the songs that I heard, I can't help but wonder if "Worth It" and "For The Lovers" are the same song, or two different songs. Time will tell. I say this because the song that Clive called "Worth It" features the "for the lovers" lyrics. So I'm a little confused by that right now, but not not significantly. Regardless, there will be 11 songs, according to Clive. When the listening event began, they actually lowered the curtain on the giant windows so that the audience could not be distracted by the view of New York outside. They clearly wanted our undivided attention, and I could see that Clive was watching the audience react. It was like we were something of a focus group, as well as an album buzz builder. I would say any one of the songs that I heard could be released as a single, and that's what they're aiming for -- an album full of singles -- but of course some songs are significantly stronger than others. As I already mentioned, I think "Million Dollar Bill" is a guaranteed hit. It is an upbeat, happy song. It begins with two "ohs" at the beginning and her voice sounded very clear to me. Since I think most, if not all, the songs haven't been mastered yet, it was hard to catch words. But I think the lyrics are spun more positively than what we initially heard. It sounded more to me like: "If he makes you feel like a million dollar bill, say oh oh ... I love it..." There is no way to capture what this song sounds like with only words on a screen. Out of all of the songs that I heard, this was the most pop, the most like 80's style Whitney, but without being like an 80's song. |

And here's the 3rd part to Lisa's review:
"Nothin' But Love" was the second song played, and it was mid-tempo with a driving beat. Some of the lyrics that I heard were: "I sit by the window thinking about all the things I've been through ..." and "Ain't gonna regret anything I've done." The song mentions the people who've done right by her and wrong by her, like "For the family who raised me (shout out, shout out)" ... no matter what Whitney "ain't got nothin' but love for ya." The bridge features a bit of lower vocals, plus holding notes and higher adlibs. "Call You Tonight" is Whitney's take of the demo that we've already heard. Since I have not analyzed the demo, I can't really do a side-by-side comparison. But of the first five songs that I heard, I ranked this at number two behind "Million Dollar Bill." After the first five, I gave up on ranking the songs! It became something of a blur with the music hitting you so fast. It wasn't that the songs weren't catchy or memorable -- they definitely were -- it's just hard to catch everything on one listen, and you end up possibly missing things by focusing on other tidbits while you're scrambling to write notes. LOL Just among the first five songs, I ranked "Nothin' But Love" third behind "Million Dolar Bill" and "Call You Tonight." I ranked "Like I Never Left" at #4 and "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" at #5. The rest of the songs were unranked simply because I gave up. I will try to give it more thought to rank the rest collectively. |

I'm so tempted to call Dave right now, but I'll exhibit some restrain and retire for the night. I need the sleep anyway. Whitney has been effecting the
quality of my work this last week. Tomorrow I predict I'm going to be spending way too much time online-

Salute - whatever I write about this song will not convey the actual feel of it. I liked it a lot. It was written by R. Kelly and it is a contemporary R&B
tell-off song. It also features what I could swear is the first bleeped curse word in a Whitney Houston song in music history. LOL. And I didn't mind it at
all. It's only one bleep, and none of the other songs did that. It opens with a bass beat and a piano, and at first you might think, "Is this a
Whitney Houston song?" And then you immediately think, "Yes, it is a Whitney Houston song, and I like it!" LOL. Some of the lyrics I heard were:
"I salute you, go on out the door, take care ..." and "I'm done, so when you leave, close the door behind you ..."
I think part of one chorus said something like: "I'm a soldier girl, in this world, I stand alone ..." and "I made it through, and now I'm gonna say to you ... salute ... salute." In the chorus, "salute" is sung very simply without holding the note, like someone just waving their hand and moving on that fast. At one point the song says something like "You think that you know everything ..." "and that your s--- don't stink..." "... I can do better" something something "whatever ..." It even references "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years." Like I said, this description is not going to convey the song properly at all. I can already imagine some of you David Foster-production lovers wringing your hands in dismay over this one. But truly, I liked this song and it's probably the only kiss-off song on the entire album. Those of you should at least cherish it as a "I threw the baggage out" kind of song. LOL. My only issue was that it seemed to end very abruptly with a guitar, but I think that's because the song is unfinished. |

Salute sounds like Bobby v.1o
That is directed at Bobby and knowing that the R is a master of telling urban stories on record, I can't wait to hear it. Who knew that he would have 2 songs on the album? they kept this under wraps. It sounds like a modern INRBIO but referencing her life. I for one am more intriqued with this song now as it seems very autobiographical. I believe that I read that there was an after party. Whoever put this event togherther and got all these folks out is a genius. Martha Stewart sent out 3 tweets tonight on this event and she has over 1 million followers. Gayle King sent out a gushing tweet and she has over 89k followers. Tweets were going off left and right and morning radio will continue to talk about it. wendy Williams will big up Whitney once again tomorrow. Steve Harvey will talk about this on his morning show tomorrow which is syndicated. Extra and Access tv will carry this on tv tomorrow and probably GMA. p.s. I apologize for the multiple post in the other thread. it did not want to submit and silly me kept hitting the enter key so five entries is what i got . SDWHITE: I CANT WAIT TO READ YOUR TAKE AS WELL AS DAV AND DJISME. Then we get to do this all over again on Thursday. Unless you are living under a rock, everyone will know that she has a cd out sept 1. |

Final song of the evening from Lisa's review/report - A Song For You ...
OK, the last song of the evening: A Song For You. The song begins like how it usually does. There is that piano intro. You're waiting for it. Her vocals are seriously on point. And then it turns into an up-tempo dance song, and it somehow completely works. It was really an upbeat way to close the event. Clive actually said that the renditon we heard was completed rough last night. What I heard at least, in terms of vocals, didn't sound rough. It sounded like she was ready to go on tour with that voice. She was really on point. |
